A New Deal for Families initiative is a collaborative effort designed to reimagine and strengthen the future of human services in a time of increasing complexity and need. Convened by Leadership for a Networked World, founded at Harvard University in partnership with The Kresge Human Services Program, this initiative brings together a select group of leaders from across the human services ecosystem who are committed to advancing meaningful, lasting change.
We are operating in a moment where longstanding systems are being tested by economic volatility, shifting demographics, and growing expectations for more equitable outcomes. At the same time, there is a unique opportunity to rethink how human services can better support individuals and families in achieving stability, mobility, and wellbeing. This initiative is grounded in the belief that progress will require not only new ideas, but also new ways of working together across sectors, disciplines, and communities.
Over the course of two years, participants will engage in a series of in-person convenings and virtual sessions designed to create space for honest conversation, shared learning, and collective problem-solving. Together, the group will work to define a forward-looking vision for human services and co-develop practical strategies, policies, and tools that leaders can use to bring that vision to life in their own contexts.
The initiative is intentionally designed to move beyond dialogue and toward action. Participants will have the opportunity to test ideas, learn from peers, and refine approaches that can drive real impact. Through this work, the New Deal for Families aims to contribute to a more responsive, effective, and equitable human services system—one that enables enduring social and economic mobility and supports a human rights economy for all people.

The Kresge Foundation was founded in 1924 to promote human progress. Today, Kresge fulfills that mission by building and strengthening pathways to equity and opportunity for low-income people in America’s cities, seeking to dismantle structural and systemic barriers to equality and justice. Using a full array of grants, loans, and other investment tools, Kresge invests more than $160 million annually to foster economic and social change. For more information, visit kresge.org.
