UPCOMING EXECUTIVE PROGRAMS

2008-2009 Cross-Boundary Leadership Series

Harvard Kennedy School, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA

The Leadership for a Networked World program is pleased to offer a series of three workshops on innovations requiring collaboration and coordination among multiple independent institutions – e.g., agencies, jurisdictions, and sectors of the economy.  New information and communication technologies enable these "cross-boundary" innovations and present unique opportunities for creating value. As they represent the next wave of change they also pose new risks and great leadership challenges. The 2008-2009 series will focus on the lifecycle stages of cross-boundary initiatives including Shaping the Vision, Driving Change, and Sustaining New Models of Operation.

Cross-Boundary Leadership: Shaping the Vision

November 18-20, 2008 (Applications being accepted soon.)

While many leaders see the potential value of cross-boundary innovation, progress is often constrained by legacy business practices, outdated technology infrastructures, and antagonistic political interests. The Shaping the Vision program is designed to help leaders address the “bootstrapping” problem of getting started with cross-boundary change. Together with senior executive peers, industry experts and Harvard faculty, participants will explore the steps they need to take to assess community readiness, understand the levers of change, formulate plans of action, and whether to move incrementally or dramatically. Participants will leave better prepared to start effective cross-boundary initiatives.

Cross-Boundary Leadership: Driving Change

February 10-12, 2009

A key challenge with cross-boundary innovation is leveraging early results to mobilize support throughout an extended enterprise network. Success depends on timely deliverables, engaging communications, and effective management of the risks of scale, uptake, and adoption. The Driving Change program explores proven pathways for “crossing the chasm” from start-up to enterprise adoption, and for managing stakeholder communications while growing operations to a proper scope and scale. Participants will learn the ins and outs of leading under stressful conditions of complexity and conflict.

Cross-Boundary Leadership: New Models of Operation

May 5-7, 2009

As cross-boundary initiatives take hold, leaders face the challenges of adapting to opportunities brought “in from the edge” of their newly-extended enterprises and networks. The New Models of Operation program will explore how leaders can adapt their styles and their organizations to networked operations where innovations are constant, promising, and attendant with new risk. How can leaders take advantage of innovative opportunities while delivering core services?  Participants will learn adaptive strategies of leadership for a networked world, and new models of operations for engaging their extended enterprise networks.
