Challenges and Opportunities

Throughout most of the twentieth century, Michigan developed an economy based on a strong mix of agriculture and industry, centered on being a global leader in the auto industry. More recently, the Michigan economy has had trouble responding to global changes in manufacturing and trade, and especially to markets that are increasingly dependent on technology, innovation, and knowledge work.

To change this situation and to spur new growth, Governor Granholm and her Cabinet have developed a Cabinet Plan that utilizes information technology as an integral component of the economic development strategy.
