Like many around the world, I was saddened to hear about it…
I remember Galbraith first from when I was an undergraduate. I was perhaps 20 rows away in the balcony while he was lecturing in Economics in Lowell Lecture Hall. It wasn't an intimate setting, but he WAS impressive -- I had come from a public high school and had not had much experience being taught by someone who had written a book on the subject they were teaching. Galbraith had written LOTS of them including The Affluent Society, the book that made me first think that public policy and public service was lots more important than inventing the 27th flavor of minty toothpaste.
I later had a chance to talk with him some at various social events -- enough to be in conversations where he was called "Ken.". I didn't really know him or work with him, but again I was impressed. Six feet 10, a sense of humor, and a reputation for getting up and writing for three hours a day before going on to do the rest of his life. Pretty impressive…
Here's more: John Kenneth Galbraith
All the best,
Jerry
